                              Aspie Friendly Products

                              Picture
What makes a tool Aspie Friendly?
When I talk to people who are not familiar with Aspergers/autism, and they ask what I do, I get very excited because I get to talk about what I love! But when I mention the part where I create educational tools for parents and educators to help kids with Aspergers on an academic level, their question is often, "Why? Aren't kids with Aspergers smart?"

While parents and educators of kids on the spectrum do understand that yes, these kiddos DO have trouble, "even though they are smart", it is also important to understand understand a) the reasons why they struggle despite their intelligence and b) what to do about it. This is an area where well-meaning adults, who love someone with autism, fall a little short of the goal.

Spectrum individuals are very good at "deconstructing", so that which starts out simple, can become complicated pretty quickly. One helpful technique is to provide charts, forms, and tools to students and young adults, which have language that is not too specific. Otherwise, it is too easy for a kid or young or adult to deconstruct the apparantly simple language, and then not understand if certain elements fit the form's parameters.

To see examples of ways simple language can be either too vague or too specific for people with autism, click on the inset diagram above, which contrasts the Aspie Friendly Learning Log with traditional reading logs like those used in most elementary schools.

Aspie Friendly General Store Sign - 99¢
General Store sign/flieris truly Aspie Friendly, because it clearly explains the system without constrictive language to get spectrum kids and young adults off-track. "Earnings" can be rewards, earned money, points or any other currency; the "shopkeeper" has the flexibility to mark prices or negotiate prices; the "shopper" understands that wants can be earned by making a special request for the General Store.

How does the "General Store" system work? Simple! The child or young adult earns a form of "currency" (such as a "reward buck", points, or coins), and once a week they shop at the General Store. The store has a variety of items, including items that the child has already expressed a desire for.

5-Star Bingo Game of Good Manners
This is a FUN and PRACTICAL game to teach socially-acceptible norms, and in a way that makes applicable use of the information, putting it into immediate practice. The child is rewarded when the skill is domonstrated in a natural way under typical circumstances. It's easy to know what to do, but getting accustomed to doing those "polite things" in a real life application is the hard part for kids who are just learning. This is a single bingo chart.

                              The Teamwork Task List
Kids can work together as well as they can work against each other, believe it or not! Kids on the spectrum need a little extra help with teamwork skills, and this is a great way to do that, as well as opportunities to work on negotiating skills. When kids use the Teamwork Task List, they benefit when they complete their own list, but they benefit more when their "team mate" does their share, too. Assign the tasks and leave it to "the team" to complete them, and it's up to them to see if they can earn their "big bonus", whether a trip to the park, a desirable toy, or a special desert after dinner.
